Medical IT Consultant
Originally from the Wirral in Merseyside, I graduated from Sheffield University in 1982 and was appointed a full time principal in General Practice in 1987 after completing my self organised vocational training scheme.
After over
20 years in the
practice, I am now the part time senior partner of a nine doctor Primary Care
Team in South East Sheffield serving over 10,000 patients. My clinical interests are
in paediatrics and asthma.
An honorary clinical teacher of medical students since 1989, I was CME tutor in Informatics for North Trent and an Honorary Lecturer at Sheffield University teaching in the Department of General Practice and on the MSc in medical informatics in the Department of Information Studies until 2008.
I have had letters and articles (on clinical topics and information management) published in a wide range of publications including the BMJ and the BJGP. My BMJ publications can be found here
I write regular clinical reviews and contribute to technical articles for Pulse
and
GP magazines and their associated monthly publications.
I have been interested
in all aspects of information technology since I built my own PC in 1990. I was LMC representative on committees advising Sheffield Health on IT matters
for 10 years and was active in the Microdoc user group eventually becoming
chair. I am a founder member of the British Healthcare Internet Association, a
member of the Society for the Internet in Medicine and of the GP Writers
Association. In 2000 I took a one-year sabbatical with Doctors.net.uk as a
visiting Fellow In Knowledge Architecture, providing information for GP’s
through their internet services.
I have spoken at and chaired a wide range of conferences and meetings mainly in the field of information management all over the UK and I have spoken at international conferences in the UK, Germany, Belgium and Ireland.
I compiled several add on spellcheck dictionary for word processors and am medical director of a company providing internet services and this software.
I undertook medical internet consultancy for a number of organisations including my local Strategic Health Authority and PCT, PharMed, The TransScript Consortium, DataTrial Ltd, Arthur D Little Associates and Sheffield University.
More recently I have been involved in several aspects of the National Programme for IT (NPfIT)
I have experience of appearing on television and in video taped presentations and also have spoken over live video links to distant audiences.
I have a
substantial technical understanding of small to medium sized networks, of the
internet and the commonly used software packages in use in the NHS.
